China has invited the world to visit in August 2008. Exactly one year out, I've traveled to the heart of the nation that has brutally occupied my homeland for over 50 years. Follow this blog, as I share what I see, feel, and experience... leaving Beijing wide open.

Bjork speaks out for Tibetan indepdence in China

BjorkBjork took a stand for Tibetan independence at a concert in Shanghai on Sunday. Following what the BBC described as a “powerful performance” of her song, Declare Independence, Bjork yelled “Tibet, Tibet” and “Raise your flag” repeatedly from the stage. She did the same thing but for Kosovo at a concert in Tokyo last week and was promptly dropped from the lineup of a summer festival in Serbia.

Not surprisingly, may Chinese are not happy with Bjork for taking this stand and some had very harsh words for her. The Associated Press is reporting one concert-goer as saying that after her remarks the atmosphere in the venue was “very strange, uncomfortable compared to the rest of the concert.”

I love Bjork. From the moment I first saw her at the Tibetan Freedom Concert I knew she was more hardcore than all the rest. In Free Tibet, the documentary about the Tibetan Freedom Concerts, Bjork gives the greatest soundbite about her political support for Tibetans and how as a child in Iceland, while watching old western movies, she was always rooting against the cowboys and for the Indians.

On behalf of all Tibetans I want to say: Thank you, Bjork.

I think I’m going to make Declare Indpendence my new theme song.

OK, Tibetans, go ahead and declare dependence.

Sorry, it was a typo. It should be “independence”. Bjork expressed her idea in Shanghai. But I doubt whether that will help. The CCP government will step up its control of performance by foreign artists. Many of Bjork’s Chinese fans will turn away because of her action. Few Chinese citizens will change their mind on the Tibetan issue just because of what Bjork says. The average Chinese person will regard this as either 1) a manifestation of how foreigners are ignorant of what is really happening in Tibet, 2) evidence of how “hostile foreign powers” are working hard to undermine the sovereignty of China. I am not saying the average Chinese’ response is correct. These are just facts as I know. But one thing is for sure, the Tibetan activists will feel happy.

“On behalf of all Tibetans I want to say: Thank you, Bjork.”

I didn’t know that Lhadon has the authority and prestige to represent all Tibetans.

I think that you really can judge people by the way they comment different stuff. Some people, even expressing negative thoughts, are still polite and they respect and understand other people. Some people are not even trying to be nice, they just don’t care. I think self-confident person will always act nice, no matter what other people do
