China has invited the world to visit in August 2008. Exactly one year out, I've traveled to the heart of the nation that has brutally occupied my homeland for over 50 years. Follow this blog, as I share what I see, feel, and experience... leaving Beijing wide open.

Who is Lhadon?

lhadon.jpgA Tibetan woman born and raised in Canada, Lhadon Tethong has traveled the world, working to build a powerful youth movement for Tibetan independence. She has spoken to countless groups about the situation in Tibet, most notably to a crowd of 66,000 at the 1998 Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington, D.C. She first became involved with Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) in 1996, when she founded a chapter at University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since then, Lhadon has been a leading force in many strategic campaigns, including the unprecedented victory against China’s World Bank project in 2000.

Lhadon is a frequent spokesperson for the Tibetan independence movement, and serves as co-chair of the Olympics Campaign Working Group of the International Tibet Support Network. She has worked for SFT since March 1999 and currently serves as the Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet International.

Students for a Free Tibet works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. SFT is a chapter-based network of young people and activists around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, SFT campaigns for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom. SFT’s role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice.

Some Quotes from Lhadon:

“The Olympics is an opportunity to push China for change, and it’s our responsibility to take the mask off the face of the Beijing regime,” says Lhadon Tethong, executive director of Students for a Free Tibet in Katmandu. “These four detained activists are just the beginning of a wave of protest” leading up to the 2008 Games.

- “The Olympic Effect”, Newsweek International, July 2007

“The Chinese government hopes to use the 2008 Olympic Games to conceal the brutality of its occupation of Tibet and win the international community’s acceptance as a modern power on the world stage,” Lhadon Tethong of the Kathmandu-based Students for a Free Tibet said on Wednesday.

“The International Olympic Committee has no business promoting the Chinese government’s political agenda by allowing the torch to be run through Tibet,” Lhadon Tethong said.

- “Olympic Torch for Everest, but doubts over Taiwan Leg”, EBCN, May 2007

Lhadon Tethong of Students for a Free Tibet spoke of the urgency Tibetans feel as their population dwindles and their culture is chipped away and the U.S. government goes along with it, claiming that China will change once in the WTO and subject to the pressures of globalization. ” ‘Constructive engagement with China’ is Clinton’s buzzword,” said Tethong, “but China has a strike-hard campaign in which people are arrested for any infraction—having a photo of the Dalai Lama, or participating in silent prayer.”

My prayers are with you and I as an American, hope that Tibet’s dreams of freedom will come true. Not only Tibet’s but other threatened countries such as Taiwan. I am from Alabama by the way and most of the movements to support such causes are for some weird reason, located mainly in New York or California.

At any rate I do what I can to support you guys even if it’s behind the scenes. The best way I could do so was by doing things online..

Keep pressing forward Llhadon and you will succeed ^___^

Lhadonla, thank you for all your genuine efforts towards the Tibetan cause. It is because of people like you that we, the Tibetan youth, have hopes of someday living in our own country and the will to get our country back in a peaceful manner. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.” So with the seed of compassion that we all have in us and the ’semshook’ deep within us, we must all work together in unity for a Free Tibet.

We must , we will and we can unmask China to the world. China need “to tell a lie thousand times” in the hope of it becoming a truth, but we need to reveal the truth once because ” a single lie detroys their whole reputation of integrity”, that is if any trace of reputation still left.

Thanks Lhakdon la
I can say atleast thanks being Tibetan, actually we need leader like you, i like peace but it does not work, look everyday in BBC showing bombardment, no day have shown the teaching of Buddam, solution for Tibet independence is we need religious leader who can tell sometime holy war so on, because either you win or loose atleast kill some chinese and die with contentment, But i am very buddhist l have more faith in our leader than others, but truth is we 50 years we stay in peace, for peace still need 1000 years to ripen the result, who have the courage to wait, so Lhadon you are exceptional example of women courage, then if we follow after you,things become even better.{ EITHER WE SAY WE ARE PART OF CHINA OR WE SAY WHITE AND BLACK LIKE OTHER POLITICIAN, PEACE IS GOOD TO LISTEN AND HEAR SOMETIME BUT WILL NOT WORK, IF WE ACT LIKE TERRORIST OTHER MINORITY WILL FOLLOW US IN CHINA, THEN EITHER YOU WIN OR ATLEAST YOU DESTROY UR ENEMY, NO RECRET}

Dear Lhadon,
you are a most serious and sensitive young woman with a lot of courage and knowledge about what is going on inside Tibet caused by the Chinese government during the last 45 years. I do hope indeed for your quick release and safe return out of China in order for you to be able to spread your words to every human being who are clever enough to listen and reflect upon this huge injustice thrown on you innicent peace loving Tibetans. If many more of us in the rest of the world should adopt the Tibetan way of living and thinking I´m pretty sure we would have a healthier world to hand over to the coming generations but it is urgent indeed before we loose all control. Thank you for what you and your organisation have done so far. Tashi Delek, take good care and eat your meal at time. Free Tibet 2008

It seems to me that working inside China has little effect and I fear for your health and life, as much as I admire your courage. Are there other nations that are sympathetic to Tibet’s situation (Canada, for example?) that might make involvement in the Olympics conditional on some positive action on the part of the Olympic committee and PRC? Are sponsors of Olympics (billions of American dollars go to fund the games) vulnerable to boycott, pressure, action? McDonalds, for example, usually puts much money into the games in exchange for promotion rights. What if a student movement refused to eat at McD’s unless… Unless what? You’ll have to help me finish that sentence. What is it that can reasonably be expected to happen? Release of all Tibetan prisoners? Right of return for the Dalai Lama? What are your goals? I think college kids would like an opportunity to exercise their political power. Are you pursuing this?

Thanks lhadon lak
I think our dream will be fulfill soon because of three reasons, CHINA WANT GOOD NAME SO THEY WILL SOLVE TIBETAN ISSUE DURING HH WAS ALIVE, BECAUSE TIBETAN LISTEN WHATEVER HE SAID, IF THEY FAIL TO ACT NOW TALKING WITH HIM WHICH IS VERY MITUAL BENEFICIAL, THEN AFTER TIBETAN WILL FOLLOW TERRORIST ACT WHICH IS EASY AND TIBETAN ARE TOUGH AND ROUGH BY BORN, SO WILL FOLLOW BY TURKISTAN, EAST MONGOLIAN, CHINESE MUSLIM, THEY JUST NEED EXAMPLE, TIBETAN ARE ENOUGH IN OUTSIDE OF TIBET TO SHOW THE EXAMPLE.
SECOND IS THROUGH DEMOCRACY IN CHINA. T
THIRD IS CHINESE WAR WITH AMERICA, THEN AMERICAN SUPPORT TIBET BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT DANGEROUS CHINA TO BECOME BIGGER THAN AMERICA, THAT IS ALL POSSIBILITY,{ WHAT WE CAN DO RIGHT NOW IS GO MORE TIBETAN IN WEST TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE BOMBS AND SO ON, DON’T SAY IN NEPAL AND INDIA, THEIR WILL HINDER EVEN YOU SPEAK FREE TIBET, BECAUSE INDIA AND NEPAL IS LIKE MOUSE IN FRONT OF OUR UNCLE CHINA}

Lhadon La, we are very happy and relieved to see that you actually did arrive safely his morning. We are all very PROUD and THANKFUL for what you have done. It’s indeed a very noble and courageous act on your part. A very good example set to our young Tibetan’s in the west.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart to all the activists who have been with Lhadon on this trip to China. Now China knows that Tibet is not alone!

Tibet Will Be FREE!!!!

P.S. Wilson Wong, if you do not like the freedom we have in the west, why don’t you back being a communist? Too much freedom of speech and movement may be un-healthy to you. Life is short, so go back and enjoy your green uniform and breathe your polluted air.

Tashidelek bod kyi pamo Lhadon La! You are such a great inspiration to all the Tibetans! I know the risk and fear you must have underwent with scores of chinese police and undercovers hovering around you while you were in Beijing because I too had to face the risk when I participated for the peaceful march to Lhasa in 1989. I applaud your courage and undying love and dedication for the Tibetan cause and freedom from the bottom of my heart. Your compassionate action for the good cause for the millions of Tibetans in and out of Tibet will be forever charished by the Tibetans in all their lives and history.
We all the Tibetans hope that you will continue to inspire us and lead us with with this life long struggle for the freedom of our wonderful motherland from the clautches of those barbaric communists.

First of all, I would like to thank you very much on the
behalf of Tibetans who are inside the Tibet and those who
don’t know what is happening outside the Tibet as a result
of China’s Fack Human Rights.
In a matter of facts, it’s responsibility of all the Tibetans
people to get our country back but we have been under the
China’r rules since 1959, because we are lack of poeple like you in our Tibet Society. however, you made an example in
Tibet’s Younths and i am sure that a lot of Tibtans want to be
like you and want to do what you are doing.
we have one goal and that is FREE TIBET!
Finally,i heartful thanks to Lhadon La and those who made it

Lhadon, we spoke at the March 10th Rally at Union Square shortly after it had wrapped up. You wrote a short commentary in my journal which I use exclusively for that day every year (one Tibetan woman wrote something in it-in Tibetan-which I have yet to have translated!) Anyway you wrote that this year’s rally was the biggest and best. Although I couldn’t agree more, next year must surpass it by leaps and bounds! I followed your blogs with much anticipation (not to mention nauseating fear for your safety!) But I see the wrathful deities of Tibet were with you all the way (no way they would turn their backs on YOU!) I’m so glad you made it back OK. Keep the flame burning, Lhadon-la. You’ve given your people more hope than one can fathom. See you at the next rally!! RANGZEN!!!
