China has invited the world to visit in August 2008. Exactly one year out, I've traveled to the heart of the nation that has brutally occupied my homeland for over 50 years. Follow this blog, as I share what I see, feel, and experience... leaving Beijing wide open.

Lhadon’s Statement

One year before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Students for a Free Tibet’s Executive Director Lhadon Tethong is in Beijing to personally observe and speak the truth about the Chinese government’s use of the Games to obscure the brutality of its occupation of Tibet.

Before leaving for China, Lhadon recorded this message for fellow Tibetans and people of conscience everywhere.

Tibet is one of the last living links to the ancient world—its meditative technology of compassion is a still untapped resource that has the potential to transform the planet. Dear lhadon la,
hats off to you for your great job. It is really inspiring to see you and your organisation doing such a marvellous job which definitely brings our freedom closer.
I currently wrok as a Social counselor at Tibetan reception center in kathmandu. During this one year i have met many new arrivals and interviewed them. At the same time there are many young boys below 15 years of age who still smokes and drinks but have zero knowledge about our culture. its all becoz of the dirty politics of China to spoil our youths who are future seeds of our country. If any child is seen doing religious activities, he/she will be expelled from the school but they are encourgaed to sit on their school bags and play cards and smokes. also there are political prisoners who has managed to escape but their friends died in prison. It would be great if you could emphasize on this issue. If needed i will send you the necessary reports on these issues.
i am really inspired your hard work. at the same time i am worried about your safety since we can’t say how cruel the chinese politics are. So please be careful and my prayers are always there for you.
yours sincerely

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.

Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the same effect. Let’s spread it out…

Best of luck.

May Tibet be free and may the Human Rights of all people throughout the world be respected. May Tibetans be able to practice their religion freely. May Tibetans be able to enjoy all the civil liberties that they as a people are entilted to, especially the right to Self-determination.

You are doing a great thing. You are standing up for what is right, what is true. While I am not a Tibetan, I am a person of conscience, and I do believe that the world should not stand back and allow the blatant vilation of Human Rights in Mainland China and occupied-Tibet to continue. You must continue to be brave.

In solidarity, God be with you.

What can one say or need to say about the greatest sacrifices our 14 Tibetan incredible indefinite hunger strikers in Delhi have been making. And then there are our Lithang nomad heroes. You have all intensified our spirit to fight for winning back our beloved motherland -Tibet which belongs to us and us only and nobody else. I do know that, around us, there are many engineers and teachers leaving their families and better living condition to build up the basic facilities and morden education in Tibet. Some of them lost their life due to diseases and tiredness. Why cannot you undertand it?

Dear Lhadon:

Hi guys,
Though what Lhadon did was undoubtedly brave in the face of arrest by the Chinese authorities, one is left to wonder whether these kinds of actions are not in reality publicity stunts which in the long run, can’t do much to pave the way for a free Tibet. Instead, I wish all Tibetans whereever they may be, would support the softly-softly approach taken by HH the Dalai Lama, for greater autonomy instead of outright separation: as the saying goes, united we stand, divided we fall…

Lhadon, you are so brave. All my sisters and brothers joined in peace on this planet, we shall honor the tradition and practice of holding the ‘holy space’ of ultimately the highest vibration for goodness and blessings in peace…something the Tibetan people and heritage has always understood and shared with the world. This is a great lesson and time in the history of all peoples, and we do at least have this year of the ‘games’ to focus this brilliantly…please let us make it PEACE.

Dear Lhadon-la,

I always admire your tireless efforts to bring Tibet and Tibetan issues alive through Students-For-A-Free-Tibet organization. I am sure we will some day witness a positive result for all the Tibetans living inside and outside of Tibet because people like you are not only working hard for the cause, but selflessly.

May you enjoy healthy life for the sake of Tibet and its six million citizens: Tibetans, of course! Long live H.H. the Dalai Lama for all of us, peace cherishing people. Under his leadership we all can enjoy happiness under any circumstances.

Dear Lhadon:

I would like to let you hear a difference voice. From the fact that you hate the Tibet railway so much, I know what you care about is not the Tibetans living in Tibet, but yourself and your group living oversea.

I have the conviction that Tibetans is getting happier and freer, like the people living in other places of China. What have you done for these people? I hope you care more about the coomon people, their livings and their future. I hope you read the real history of Tibet. I wish you, and all Tibets happy and free.

Tashi Delek,
I was in Tibet in May and although I have been a strong supporter of Tibet for a long time, my experiences made me realize how urgent change is needed. I have many Chinese friends who disagree with my ideas, however have invited me to the Beijing games. I’m still debating whether or not I should go—the last thing I want to do is financially support the Chinese government. I truly hope that during the upcoming year, people will recognize the harm China poses towards an entire race and how important it is that China is condemned for its actions. Thank you for all your work. Free Tibet.

I am fully in support of freedom for Tibet. My comment is this, as a Canadian Buddhist having lived in China for four years and traveled extensively in Tibet, Sichuan Tibet, and China, I encourage ALL protesters to please:

INCLUDE Chinese characters at least, and Tibetan where possible, on ALL signage.

When this is not included, Chinese people themselves are kept out of the loop as usual. Chinese government will respond more strongly to Chinese and English slogans and this I believe is necessary to avoid only preaching to existing supports, and instead effectively disseminating information within the country and working to loosen the government’s control of information over everyday Chinese (and Tibetans).

Lhadon,
I had the opportunity of meeting you at a fundraiser held about a month ago. It was Student’s for a Free Tibet and a flying trapeze was used as a metaphor for freedom. I was so inspired and moved by watching your video and hearing you and and other Tibetan exiles speak. At the moment I am writing an editorial paper for a college Rhetoric class, and Tibet is my focus. It is amazing how we can live for so long without acknowledging the plight and suffering of others. Thank you for opening my eyes to the situation in Tibet more fully. You are an inspiration.

Dear Lhadon,
You are truely inspirational to all the tibetans all over the world. We love you and admire you.keep up the good work and we are always with you. I would also like to say to Mr S Cai that i agree with him when he says we need to make the ordinary chinese people our friends and not enemies but i refuse to believe that a mere scene showing a tibetan antelope mascot kicking the other three mascots could turn you or an ordinary chinese guy into our enemy. i would expect a broader mind set from a chinese studying in the u.s. Remember, we are the people who lost our country we lost more than a million tibetans and 99% of our monasteries during chinese rule. And yet we don’t hate you we dont consider the “ORDINARY CHINESE” people our enemy. we’re just fighting for a “FREE TIBET” boe gyalo

Foreigners in Tibet during the riots described Tibetans as the main agressors that caused damage and attacked Hans and muslims. How can you claim the moral high ground as Tibetan rioters are willing to go as far as throwing bricks at a Han infants on the street and attacking people with knives? This information came from a Western journalist, the only one there before the riots began, although he was expelled as soon as his permission expired with a renewal denied, he himself stated on ABC that he was for the most part allowed to roam free. I fear for the future Tibetan movement & their radicalized youth, that will resemble more Jihad than Ghandi.
How can you justify and ignore these facts while wailing on the other side? It’s a biased, if not more so than Xinhua.
