Free Tibet on the Great Wall

August 7th, 2007

I am at a loss for words. This morning, 6 amazing people of conscience risked their lives to defend the Tibetan people.

At 9 am today Mel, Sam, Leslie, Pete, Nupur and Duane dropped a 450-square foot banner from the Great Wall of China. News of this action has already spread around the world, inserting the message “One World One Dream Free Tibet” into every news story being filed about the one-year countdown to the 2008 Games.

This is what the Chinese government gets for trying to sell the world a lie. They want the Olympic spotlight and they want to improve their global image without actually doing anything to change their authoritarian ways. Simply window dressing the capital at this time is not enough.

We don’t know where the ‘Great Wall 6′ are right now. There is no word yet. But they are in the hearts, minds and prayers of countless of people around the world. We trust the Chinese authorities will treat them well and release them soon. The whole world is watching…

We just learned from a contact in Tibet that Tibetans there have heard about the banner hang on the Great Wall. No word on what the reaction is, but clearly the Chinese can’t censor every channel of communication. Let this be a beacon of hope — one of many to come in the near future.

And now - not to beat a dead horse but does anyone know how to send an email to Jacques Rogge? I tried again today - this time sending it to his attention at the IOC information email address - it bounced back - “recepient rejected” - oh yeah?

Can anyone tell me how to email the elusive Dr. Rogge? (Dr. Rogue) Thanks -

    Camis

Tears flow to see the Tibetan flag on the TV screen, and this story leading the national news. Congratulations, and keep up the good work. Wishing you safety and good health always.

  • Lobsang says:

The whole Europe form England to Poland is being united under the banner of European Union. The western world is hatching a conspiracy against the rise of India and China in the East. When Bulgeria, Romania and Poland can remain united under EU, why cant you be united with China. Tibet was part of China there was 17 point agreement between your leader and the chinese government. Later CIA and Indians gave you money and you guys went for resistance movement in 1959. Do you want to sell your motherland to Americans? You are of Mongol origin and chinese in broader sense. So, dont sell Tibet to western hand for money you get from the western world.

  • Lhobsang says:

Tibet is part of China and these people are on CIA payrolls. you guys are selling your country to Americans. Dont forget that you are mongol origin. you are not Americans.

  • Lhobsang says:

What sort of democracy you are talking about ? in this site, only free Tibet comments are published?

    So touched by this.

    Deep Bows…

  • Freedomforeveryone says:

    Dear “Lobsang”,

If we follow your logic, then we Tibetans should look to what our ancestorial Mongolians are doing in their own country Mongolia.

Well, guess what.. they are “selling” themselves to the United States. I guess they think its better to be part of United States empire than the Chinese empire??

    Best wishes,
    A Tibetan friend

  • bookishboy says:

“This is what the Chinese government gets for trying to sell the world a lie.”

Um, am I missing something? They apparently “get” all of Tibet. And in exchange they have to put up with an annoying banner, hung on one of their national monuments for the scant hour it takes the authorities to remove it.

Why do I get the feeling that China would be OK with that?

  • bookishboy says:

    Oh, almost forgot to add:

They also get to imprison the folks who hung the banner, pending some protracted negotiatians with 3 separate consulates.

  • MartyrsBanner says:

Regardless of whether Tibet merits the status of a nation, it is right now an undeniable part of China. In the past several hundred years, China has come under countless foreign attacks aimed to split it apart - do people seriously think that they will give away Tibet that easily? Do people seriously think that they will cower under protests staged in foreign nations? Fools! China will fight to the end to preserve the integrity of its borders.

Hanging that ugly banner on the Great Wall is simply a troubling sign of the naivete of foreigners; the people responsible should feel grateful that they hadn’t been lynched.
